How to Tidy with the KonMarie Method

In Declutter, Removing Clutter by Kristy2 Comments

You are probably wondering what the heck is the KonMarie Method? Marie Kondo is a consultant in Tokyo who assists her clients in transforming their cluttered homes into spaces of serenity. Her method has become an international phenomenon. Her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up has sold over two million copies worldwide. I would highly recommend reading this book if you are struggling with clutter. It is an awesome book Marie includes explanations for why other decluttering methods are not working. Marie guarantees that her method is fool proof. I won’t overwhelm you with a ton of details. I’ll let the book blow your mind. Below are the 8 easy steps of the KonMarie method.

Tidying with the KonMarie Method

  • Step One: Dress up for the occasion
    • This is a special event, so dress up and get to work!
  • Step Two: Tidy all at once
    • This should be a one time event and not a daily task!
  • Step Three: Discard by category, not location
    • In this particular order: clothing, books, paper, miscellaneous items, sentimental items.
  • Step Four: Put everything on the floor
    • Take everything in the category and put it in a pile on the floor. This enables you to see how much you really have.
  • Step Five: Hold each and every itemMarie Kondo- How to Tidy with the KonMarie Method|funscapade.com
    • Pick an object from the pile and ask yourself “does this spark joy?”
      • If yes, keep it
      • In no, set it aside to donate or sell
  • Step Six: Focus
    • Do not play music or have the TV on while you sort your belongings
  • Step Seven: Discard and then organize
    • Resist the urge to put things away as you go!
  • Step Eight: Thank your belongings for their service
    • Practice gratitude and find something good to say about each item you discard
    • Don’t forget to appreciate the items you are keeping also!

Some of these steps sound silly, but they help with the emotional and overwhelming parts or sorting your possessions. This entire method is designed so that you only keep what sparks joy. There are reasons why this method works and nothing else does. I used this method to declutter my closet and it has stayed organized. I am still in shock at how many boxes and bags I filled.
